John Lewis’s sales didn’t rise by much in the seven days to December 17. But a 0.4% uptick was a rise nonetheless and with Christmas falling on a Sunday this year, the retailer is expecting sales to continue strongly all the way up to Christmas Eve.

Knitwear proved strong at John Lewis in the latest week

The omnichannel retailer said that sales rose to £172.5m year-on-year, but Fashion had a better time of it with a 2.6% rise. Within this, knitwear went wild, rising 35%.

Meanwhile menswear sales rose a healthy 6.6% and sales of beauty, wellbeing & leisure products were up 2.1%.

While its EHT category, which includes electricals and home tech, was down 0.6%, Dyson’s supersonic hairdryer was again the best selling electrical item. Headphones, mobile phones and wearable tech products also achieved record sales, and sales of large electrical items were also strong.

Home sales were down 1.3% year on year, however sales of upholstery were up 18%, and sales of express curtains were up 34%. Gifting achieved another record week in which food gifts sold particularly well. And the Christmas Shops saw sales rise by 8%.
