The minister also expected khadi revenue to grow over five times from Rs 75,000 crore ($10.2 billion) to Rs 5 lakh crore during this period.

The Union Government has consistently promoted khadi as a traditional and sustainable textile and aims to increase exports of garments made from the textile as part of its 'Make in India' campaign.

''This sector can create five crore new jobs in the next five years. Marketing was a big problem for this sector so an Alibaba-inspired marketing portal for selling their products is on the anvil. Post offices will be used to deliver khadi products,'' Gadkari said, during a visit to Central Bee Research and Training Institute, in Pune.

“The growth in the turnover in this sector will come from new focus areas such as honey, fisheries, biofuels, bamboo and agro and forest products. Ayurvedic products was another area where growth prospects could be increased from Rs 20,000 crore to Rs 1,00,000 crore,” he added.

To promote khadi, the government had allocated Rs 1,252.65 crore towards the development of Khadi and village industries in its last budget. The total is a three percent increase compared to the year before.
