The Khadi and Village Industries Commission reported that sales at its flagship outlet in Connaught Place, New Delhi crossed Rs 1.02 crore ($153,000) on the day of festival Gandhi Jayanti.

KVIC reported strong Khadi sales on Gandhi Jayanti on Friday - Khadi India

KVIC announced that its October 2 sales on Gandhi Jayanti totalled Rs 1.02 crore, compared to Rs 1.27 for the festival in 2019, the Press Trust of India reported. Although the total was less than last year, this year the store had to run with social distancing measures in place.

Gandhi Jayanti celebrates Mahatma Gandhi and, as he promoted Khadi products during his lifetime, is a traditional time to purchase handloom goods. As such, KVIC launches a number of discounts and promotions in its Khadi India stores to celebrate the festival.

“As many as 1,633 bills were generated throughout the day with an average purchase of Rs 6,258 per bill,” KVIC said in a statement, the Press Trust of India reported.

“Customers belonging to different segments and age-groups queued at the Khadi India outlet since morning.”

“Despite coronavirus pandemic, a large number of people still came out to buy Khadi which is a result of the repeated appeals of the Prime Minister,” said KVIC chairman, Vinai Kumar Saxena.

“Khadi has become a household name and the number of Khadi lovers is constantly growing.”
