Kaushik Velendra shows CSM graduate menswear collection at LFW
Chennai-based designer Kaushik Velendra showed his debut collection at London Fashion Week as part of the Central Saint Martins MA collection showcase.
Kaushik Velendra hails from Chennai and has been studying at CSM for the past five years. For his MA collection, Velendra presented a collection that married sleek menswear tailoring with sportswear inspired details and silhouettes.
“My graduate collection was all about re-thinking the tailored man,” Velendra told Vogue. “The hybrid collection takes a modern dimension, observing the DNA of sportswear and the human anatomy. Tailoring and sportswear are deeply engaged with each other through their construction and relationship with the human body. My collection investigates the infinite possibilities of linking the two together, creating a new generation of a modern, futuristic, sophisticated and luxurious man.”
Velendra, who is 28 years old, presents a new vision of masculinity, one that shows the male form in a modern, sculptural way. The collection also included a number of innovative fabrics including a special heat-reacting felt to sculpt the smooth shoulder pads and magnetic zips for closures. Part of the collection was also fabricated in Velendra’s native Chennai.
“The most exciting part of the collection was my collaboration with Jean Francois Lesage and his amazing team at Vastrakala in Chennai—they beaded my collection with new materials and traditional Indian techniques of embroidery,” the designer told Vogue. “This also gave me the opportunity to work with my fellow artisans from Chennai, and I was happy to represent their art at London Fashion Week.”
The collection also featured shoes handmade in Paris together with former Christian Louboutin atelier Fred Rolland. Velendra made a powerful debut this LFW and has broken out as a designer to watch.
