The Karkhana Chronicles II recently launched an online exhibition to celebrate India’s rich textile heritage and open up a conversation on the revival of traditional knowledge and practices in the Indian fashion industry. As part of the initiative, designer Sanjay Garg partnered with NGOs Rehwa and Women Weave, which are both supported by the Holkar family, to create an installation in Indore, the exhibition announced in a press release.

Garg designed a recreation of Maharaja Yeshwantrao’s cape using a lining of four pedal textile woven by WomenWeave in Maheshwar. Garg took inspiration from Boutet de Monvel portraits of HH Maharaja Yeshwantrao II and HH Maharani Sanyogitaraje Holkar, in which the couple were presented in both a traditional Indian and European look. The cape was designed to demonstrate the versatility of Maheshwari weaving in more contemporary applications to inspire others to contribute to reviving the technique.

The installation in Indore also features a ‘Sanyogita’ saree, a traditional Maheshwari saree designed to showcase the craft in its original form and which was recreated by Rehwa two years ago. The initiative also has an emphasis on sustainability, especially water stewardship. The royal families of Indore, Kathiwada, Bhavnagar, and Mysore have given their support to the exhibition.
