Kanabis has collaborated with the charitable organisation Hunar Ek Prayas, which works to support Indian women. Through the collaboration, women affiliated with the organisation now produce the fabric shoe bags that Kanabis’ shoes come in. Kanabis, along with being vegan, operates using sustainable production methods, meaning the women at the Hunar Ek Prayas foundation are paid a living wage.

“We engaged with the women from Mirzapur, a slum in Ghaziabad, to handcraft Kanabis shoe bags and mini coin pouches using our leftover fabric as part of our zero waste initiative,” wrote the brand on its social media about the project.

The brand has also recently collaborated with the ethical beauty brand Daughter Earth and was recently offering free tester packs with orders placed on Kanabis’ e-commerce store. Collaborating with other ethical brands has been a part of Kanabis’ business from the get go.

Kanabis was launched by Devika Srimal Bapna in 2015. Working as an accountant in London, Bapna returned to her native India to start the label. Kanabis uses hemp to produce shoes that are both vegan and durable. Speaking about ethical vegan fashion, Bapna told OZY: “You can love it or hate it but you can’t ignore it today.”
