On October 2, the Union Minister for the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Giriraj Sing inaugurated Khadi Fest 2018 in Mumbai, a trade show that promotes business using the sustainable textile among others. Sing took the opportunity to state that KVIC, which comes under his ministry’s jurisdiction, has been attending international trade shows and expos to promote Khadi.

Sing stated that KVIC started this campaign on August 15 and has so far held ten Khadi expos in various countries and has another 50 such expos planned. The Ministry aims to take the total to 150 in the coming few months.

“Our aim is to generate employment,” said Sing speaking at Khadi Fest. “We do not focus on profits but promote social welfare by bringing women entrepreneurship in rural India.”

Khadi Fest is organised to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who famously championed the Khadi textile.

Sing also stated his aim to simultaneously increase production of and promote “Charkha” and cow dung and cow urine, used primarily in the health and beauty industries.

“We expect every panchayat [gram] to generate Rs 100 million per annum from ‘Charkha’ and Rs 150 million from household articles made of cow dung and urine. This Rs 250 million per annum revenue earned by every panchayat will help India achieve enormous rural economic growth," said Sing.
