On February 18, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission held its national awareness programme in Jaipur, Rajasthan to encourage people to create and manage their own businesses.

The government’s Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises’s KVIC encouraged students, entrepreneurs, and other residents of Jaipur to “build the enterprise of your dreams,” on Tuesday, KVIC announced on Facebook. The government body aimed to empower people in Rajasthan to embrace local crafts, manufacture high quality products, and export them for sale abroad.

The government plans to increase exports of handloom fabric, handicraft goods, and other traditional and local products as part of its wider ‘Make in India’ campaign, which aims to increase domestic production, decrease imports, and increase exports. The government has promoted handicrafts and handloom fabric at a number of international trade shows, both through the MSME Ministry and the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts.

“Khadi connotes the beginning of economic freedom in the country and equality for all,” KVIC announced on Facebook on Tuesday.

“It is a symbol of unity of Indian humanity.” The organisation aims to decentralise production and distribution of many products, including handloom textiles, citing Mahatma Ghandi’s “Khadi mentality” as inspiration.

As well as textiles, KVIC also works with a large number of other village industries including bee keeping. KVIC recently designed an ‘Apiary on Wheels’ as a pilot project to make bee keeping more accessible as a source of income and to create honey to be used for personal care and food items, it announced on February 19.
