The exhibition, which spans five galleries, asks three questions: “Who is the Craftsperson? Who is the designer? Who is the artist?” Through Kaul’s curation, the exhibition aims to inspire visitors to ponder this question in relation to India’s textile heritage.

The exhibition features textile art by Ajit Kumar Das who uses an ancient method of dying fabric naturally whilst adding his own techniques. The designer Jadunath Suparkar has lent a black handwoven Tanchoi Sari to the exhibit, worked on with Haji Moinuddin Girast in Varanasi, which was created in the 1980s. Sanjay Garg has also donated a hand-embroidered silk organza and chikankari piece from his recent collection “Cloud People” which was shown at Mumbai’s Royal Opera House during Fashion Week.

The exhibition maps out the evolution of textiles and craft in India. “The dialogues between fashion, handcraft and textiles are important because they interact with each other more than we often assume—whether this is in terms of aesthetic influences or innovation in materials used,” Kaul told Vogue India.

Starting with the handloom textile Khadi, the exhibition moves through India’s textile history to include pieces by the design duo Abraham & Thakore as well as Nelly Sethna. Finally, modern textile innovations are showcased including designs by Rajesh Pratap Singh, Akaaro by Gaurav Jai Gupta, Anavila, and Rahul Mishra.

The exhibition will run at the Jawahar Kala Kendra until July 31.
