Industry bodies propose setting up jewellery park in Uttar Pradesh

Jewellery industry bodies and businesses have proposed setting up a jewellery part in Uttar Pradesh to create employment opportunities for migrant workers who have returned home.
A large number of jewellery sector workers returned to their homes in Uttar Pradesh during the pan-India lockdown brought about by Covid-19. In order to take advantage of what is now a large talent pool in the area and to offset unemployment, a jewellery park focused on bringing in silver jewellers into the unorganised sector has been proposed.
“A Jewellery Park located between Agra, which is the hub of jewellery manufacturing, and Lucknow, which has an airport, will help in giving the industry various crucial services like banking, polishing, cutting, finding purity and many others under one roof,” the All India Jewellers and Goldsmiths Federation’s general secretary Nitin Kedia told ET Bureau.
“There are issues of safety, especially for the unorganised sector of this business,” Agra-based bullion trader Rishabh Singhal told ET Bureau. “At the Jewellery Park, the banks supplying silver will be present and the suppliers will be able to set up vaults of bigger capacity.”
Along with Uttar Pradesh being a silver hub, the precious metal has also been highlighted, along with lab grown diamonds, as one of the two most promising sectors for growth in the Indian jewellery export industry. The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council recently encouraged the industry to focus on silver as, with rising export numbers and a wealth of designs, it believes silver has high potential in the international market.
