Indian leather goods and footwear exports increased by 20% to the West Asia and North Africa region in the first half of this fiscal. The government sought to further boost trade at the India Footwear and Leather Products Show 2022 in Dubai which concluded in December 14.

India is one of the world's largest leather producers

“As for footwear and leather exports, we are already on the road to a higher market share in WANA from the current 3.78% this year,” said the chairman of the Council for Leather Exports Sanjay Leekha, the Press Trust of India reported.

The India Footwear and Leather Products Show 2022 ran from December 13 to 14 in Dubai with the aim of promoting Indian exports. The trade show is part of the Government of India’s export promotion drive across global markets and spanning numerous sectors.

“We are emerging out of the pandemic slowdown when exports declined by 28% in 2020 to 2021,” said Leekha. “However, we have recovered significantly in the last fiscal with exports registering a growth of 32% overall, and the growth trend is continuing this year as well.”

The CLE expects exports to the WANA region to continue to grow, it announced in a press release.  The UAE is a region which the CLE sees as having significant potential for growth.
