The BIS has, “now made provision to allow a common consumer to get the purity of their unhallmarked gold jewellerytested at any of the BIS recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs),” the organisation said in a statement, the Press Trust of India reported.

The BIS has set its charges for testing gold jewellery for consumers at the recognised assaying facilities at Rs 200 for up to four articles of jewellery. For over five articles of jewellery, the price is Rs 45 per piece.

According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, mandatory gold hallmarking has been successfully implemented with around three lakh gold articles being given Hallmark Unique Identification numbers every day, ET Bureau reported. The BIS has instructed hallmarking centres to prioritise the testing of gold jewellery for consumers, it said.

“The test report issued to the consumer will assure the consumer about the purity of their jewellery and will also be useful if the consumer wishes to sell the jewellery lying with him,” said the BIS.

The organisations has also launched a mobile app where people can type in the HUID number on their gold jewellery to check if it is genuine. The app is called ‘BIS Care’ and is available on the Google Play Store.
