Indian authorities seek to extradite Nirav Modi's brother in PNB fraud case

The Central Bureau of Investigation has initiated proceedings to attempt to extradite jewellery tycoon Nirav Modi’s brother Nehal Modi from the U.S. to India as part of the ongoing Punjab National Bank fraud case. 

Nehal Modi, a Belgian national, is accused along with his brother Nirav and Uncle Mehul Choksi in one of the largest scale fraud cases in India’s banking history. Nehal Modi is currently in the U.S. where he was arrested in December 2020 in connection to another criminal case there, ET Bureau reported.  
 
The investigation submitted an, “affidavit of extradition request of the Government of the Republic of India to the Government of the United States of America for the extradition of Nehal Modi,” before special CBI judge VC Barde on Friday, TNN reported. 

The CBI also stated that Nehal Modi failed to join the fraud probe despite the fact that he had summons and a non-bailable warrant issued against him. The Enforcement Directorate has also requested Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice against Nehal Modi. 
 
A UK court recently ruled to extradite Nirav Modi from Wandsworth Prison, where he has been held since his arrest, to India to stand trial in the fraud case. Nirav Modi has access to an appeal process which could delay the process significantly. Indian authorities are also attempting to extradite Mehul Choksi from Antigua to India.
