Total spending on clothing in India in 2018 rose to Rs 5,408 billion from Rs 1,924 billion in 2010, the report found. Menswear makes up the largest category in the country’s apparel market at 41 percent.

Children’s wear was found to be the fasting growing category currently making up 21 percent of the apparel market. Womenswear, making up 38 percent of India’s apparel market, was dominated by ethnic wear. However, denim was the fastest growing category for women. The report attributed this growth to rising income levels, rising number of women in employment, and rising number of female college students.

Top metro cities accounted for 20 percent of the nation’s apparel purchases although under 20 percent of the population live in these cities. Not only to the top metros show greater purchasing power overall, they also account for most of women’s western wear sales, especially compared to Tier 1 and 2 cities.

Although metros see the greatest amounts of fashion purchases, growth has also been facilitated by brands opening stores in non-metro locations. Rural shoppers have an increasing awareness of fashion and brands are taking advantage of this trend, the report stated.
