Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery signs MoU with Savitribai Phule Pune University for jewellery design BA

On November 18, the Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery signed a memorandum of understanding with Savitribai Phule Pune University to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Gems and Jewellery Designing.

With the aim of developing India’s gems and jewellery sector, the IIGJ and Savitribai Phule Pune University have collaborated on a three-year BA programme for the industry. Both parties, including SPPU Registrar, Prafulla A. Pawar, and IIGJ Mumbai Chairman, Kirit Bhansali, signed the MoU at an event at the university’s historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hall.
 
“The SPPU/IIGJ combine is poised to be the most innovative and dynamic jewellery training university course in the country,” the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council shared on its website. 

The BA will focus on research and development in the jewellery industry, as well as design. IIGJ Mumbai will contribute 26 experienced faculty members to the project, as well as a manufacturing workshop and a 50-station digital design software laboratory. 
 
“This collaboration between the Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery, Mumbai and Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune now gives recognition to the importance of research and development in the gems and jewellery sector in India and marks the first step in providing formal education and training in this fast growing sector,” the GJEPC shared.

“The partnership between the two institutions will help to further the cause of a skill-based education in gems and jewellery in India.”
