Omni-channel beauty giant Nykaa’s CEO and founder Falguni Nayar is confident the country’s beauty industry will continue to grow and overtake several European countries to become the fifth largest in the world.

Nayar recently shared her optimism for continued growth in the Indian organised beauty space at a panel discussion at Investcorp Global Conversations, ET Bureau reported.
“In beauty, India will be the fifth largest market in the world very soon because of the growth rate that it is experiencing versus European growth rates,” said Nayar at the forum, the Press Trust of India reported. “Those markets are ahead of India but very soon India will overtake that.”

Nayar, whose business also includes fashion arm Nykaa Fashion which has a dedicated e-commerce website and nascent brick-and-mortar presence, also said that India’s fashion market is becoming more organised. The fashion market is currently 80% to 85% unorganised and this represents a significant business opportunity as it becomes more organised, according to Nayar.

“If you look at fashion with the size and scale that the fashion market has in India, it is the third largest market in the world and a lot of it is unorganised but it has shifted,” said Nayar. “At the beginning 80-85% of the market is unorganised but it is getting very rapidly organised.”

Nayar’s optimism comes at a time when her business is continuing to expand its domestic and international brand selection as well as its brick-and-mortar network. Nykaa reported a significant drop in consolidated profit in the third quarter of the 2022 financial year and Nayar attributed this to a doubling of marketing expenses.
