India seeks jewellery trade ties with Switzerland
The Embassy of India (Berne), the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, and the Swiss-India Chamber of Commerce, Zurich have partnered for the India Global Connect to link Swiss and Indian jewellery businesses.
On November 26, the India Global Connect linked 11 Indian jewellery manufacturing businesses with eight Swiss businesses in the retail and wholesale sectors of the industry, the GJEPC reported on its website. The meet was designed to promote India as a manufacturing hub for fine jewellery and also included a panel discussion.
“India has a long-standing and dynamic relationship with Switzerland and we are celebrating the 72nd anniversary of our friendship treaty,” said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Department of Commerce joint secretary, Suresh Kumar, in his keynote address at the event.
“Let us make use of this opportunity in the times of travel restrictions to tap right business opportunities globally.”
The Indian Embassy in Switzerland’s second secretary (commerce), Roshni Thomson, spoke of the strong foundation behind Swiss and Indian trade links and shared that, as per the Swiss Federal Department of Finance figures, in 2018, India was Switzerland’s eighth largest trading partner.
From April 2000 to September 2019, Switzerland was India’s 12th largest investor, accounting for around 1.07% of total foreign direct investment in India during that time period, according to Thomson.
“The pandemic is the new reality, and GJEPC has been proactive in organising programs like India Global Connect and Buyer Seller Meets for helping gem and jewellery manufacturers adapt to the virtual world,” said GJEPC chairman Colin Shah at the meet.
