The upcoming Diwali five day sales season could generate up to $3 billion (Rs 20,000 crore) in sales for India’s e-commerce giants including Amazon and Flipkart, according to a report from Red Seer Consulting.

The upcoming Diwali five day sales season could generate up to $3 billion in online revenue

The sales season could garner double the revenue of the sales season the year before, the report said. The Diwali season is when most e-commerce firms, including and especially fashion businesses, generate the majority of their annual sales. Customers buy gifts and are also lured in by the sales.

Flipkart is hoping to double its sales over the upcoming Diwali season during its annual Big Billion Days sale and reach a sales total of $1.5 to $1.7 billion. Amazon will also hold its main annual sale, the Great Indian Festival sale, during the same time and aims to reach a higher sales total than Flipkart over the sale. The sale is the largest yearly battle in the ongoing war between Flipkart and Amazon.

The Diwali will also be the first for Flipkart after the Walmart acquisition deal and so the business is keen to get the new partnership off to a good start. Amazon is also keen to overtake Flipkart as reports generally place it just behind Flipkart in the race for Indian e-commerce dominance.
