The battle for superiority in India’s fast growing e-commerce market is heating up with the two leading players Flipkart and Amazon going all out to capture the market.

Just a day after American firm Amazon announced that it will continue to invest heavily in its India unit, Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has shot back by citing reports by Morgan Stanley and BoFa Merryll Lynch that proclaimed it to be the undisputed market leader in India.

In recent reports, The Bank of America Merrill Lynch had proclaimed Flipkart as the leader with over 43 per cent market share in India.

“All recent reports and surveys have confirmed Flipkart’s position as the largest and the most trusted e-commerce brand. We established a clear lead over the competition with less than 1/3rd costs,” a Flipkart spokesperson told the Economic Times.

Flipkart said, the company with its partners including Myntra and Jabong has a dominant 75% market leadership in fashion.

The Benguluru based firm also added that they have a clear market leadership in smart phones, televisions, large appliances including washing machines, refrigerators and air conditioners, where they are more than double of the number two player indicating to Amazon.

The Bank of America Merrill Lynch report had also said that Amazon is improving its foothold in India.

“We now expect Amazon’s GMV (gross merchandise value) market share to improve to 37 per cent by 2019 from 21 per cent in 2015 and expect it to be close No 2 behind Flipkart,” the report said.

Most of Amazon’s gains have come at the expense of Snapdeal and other sellers, not Flipkart, according to the report.

However, Amazon has made its intension clear by infusing Rs 2010 crores in India this month that it wants to topple Flipkart from the numero uno position.

Amazon country head in India, Amit Agarwal said in a recent report that the company will continue to invest aggressively in 2017 to emerge as the market leader.
