The Delhi chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs hosted the eighth edition of India Internet Day on April 25 to bring together online retailers and businesses to discuss the future of Indian e-commerce.

Paytm’s founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma believes that India should keep its data local - Paytm- Facebook

This year’s edition of India Internet Day was titled 'India Internet Unboxed: Getting ready for a 100 Unicorns' and the seminar event focused on how to “unbox” current e-commerce opportunities including international trade, technology, funding, and talent. The event took place at the Leela Ambience in Gurugram and included a breakfast, lunch, and gala dinner.

Speakers at the event included Microsoft India president Anant Maheshwari, Google Vice President and TiE president Rajan Anandan, Nicoboar co-founder Raul Rai, and Avendus Capita co-founder and managing director Gaurav Deepak among others. Trade with Chinese businesses was a major topic at the event and Chinese fashion retailer Club Factory’s founder and CEO Yun Lou addressed the audience on the topic.

At the event, Paytm’s founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma spoke about data; a key topic in debates over the government’s draft e-commerce policy.

“Anyone who wants to take the data should take it on a sample basis,” Sharma told the Economic Times on the sidelines of the event.

“Why not instead bring the software to this part of the world when there are enough development centres here. So think about bringing the code here and running it.”

Sharma has been vocal about the need to protect Indian interests with the draft e-commerce policy.
