Fashion Meets Art saw a dozen designers produce creations inspired by different aspects of the art world and showcase them on the runway in Swabhumi, Kolkata. The design duo Abraham and Thakore presented a look inspired by the artist Nasreen Mohamedi’s signature minimalist line drawings. Mohamedi’s futuristic art was reflected in the design’s prints and sharp silhouettes.

The local brand Bobo Calcutta was inspired by the French artist Henri Rousseau youthful and dreamlike landscapes to create a “saree poncho”.

"I believe that good art should create an encounter with the viewer and much like that, with my garments, I hope to initiate such an intimate encounter with the wearer," the brand’s print designer, Ayushman Mitra, told India Today about the creation.

Designer Samant Chauhan created an ensemble inspired by Vibha Galhotra’s art and Shantanu and Nikhil were inspired by Phulkari, the bright Indian textile technique.

"We have been inspired by the facets and emotions of India, but in a modern way," said the design duo at the show.

Another design duo, Shivan and Narresh, took Gond tribal art of Madhya Pradesh as their inspiration and featured the tradition’s mythical animals on a saree. Another French artist also featured as Gaurav Gupta interpreted Claude Monet's paintings with his own flair.

Kiran Uttam Ghosh, a Kolkata-based designer, was inspired by Gustav Klimt's gold paintings and Delhi-based designers Pankaj and Nidhi were inspired by the Japanese tradition of origami. Rahul Mishra looked to the Netherlands and created a look inspired by M.C. Escher’s tessellating futurism.

Both Rimzim Dadu and Suneet Varma chose Salvador Dali as their muse. Dadu took the theme of “metamorphosis” to create a garment that used wires to move with the wearer and Varma created a shimmering ruffled saree. The Omaggio Performing Company closed the evening.
