India Size survey to begin in March

The government will begin to collect the data for its “India Size” chart next month. The government-approved project will see 25,000 Indians across the country measured with 3D body scanners to create a country-specific size chart for clothing.

This March, the government will roll out the first phase of its plan to create its first ever comprehensive size chart system for Indian body types. The first step will be to measure 25,000 men and women from six cities in six different regions of the country. The regions comprise Kolkata (East), Mumbai (West), New Delhi (North), Hyderabad (Central India), Bengaluru (South), and Shillong (North-East) and so the government aims to capture how body size and type vary across the country.

"We want that we should have Indian size for two things,” explained Textiles Secretary Raghvendra Singh, as reported by the Press Trust of India. “It can boost our retail market… plus our own diaspora which is outside, we will become influence drivers for foreign companies also. We are actually rolling out the exercise in March itself."

Raghvendra stated that the government aims to finish the project as soon as possible to get India-specific size clothing on shelves in the near future. As India’s clothing market becomes more organised with brands penetrating further into rural areas, the time is right for a national size chart. When the size chart is complete, India will join concise list of 14 countries that have their own size charts including the UK, Australia, US, Mexico, and South Korea.
