Ikea stops online sales in India amid complete lockdown

Swedish home furnishings major Ikea has announced that has stopped its online sales in the country amid the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.

The company had earlier shut down its only store in the city of Hyderabad on March 20. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged India’s 1.3 billion people to stay home and the majority of the country is under lockdown. As of Monday, India had reported 471 cases of the virus and nine deaths.
 
With all activities being suspended in the country, Ikea has no option but to stop its online sales with immediate effect.

Commenting on the closure of its e-commerce operations in India, Ikea in a statement said: “At Ikea, we are committed to the safety and well-being of our customers and co-workers.”
 
“We are closely following governmental directives and, in line with the guidelines, we will keep our Hyderabad store, our customer support centre and our warehouses closed. Hence, we will no longer be able to take online orders starting March 23, 2020, 6 pm, until further notice,” the statement added.
