Swedish business Ikea has leased a retail space measuring over one lakh square feet and spread over two floors in R City Mall in Ghatkopar, Mumbai. The business will open a ‘city-center’ store in the mall.

Ikea has signed a nine-year lease on the space within R City Mall and the store launch will bring its total of smaller-scale city-centre stores in Mumbai to two, ET Bureau reported. Ikea’s smaller-scale stores enable the business to open in locations within cities as opposed to its original, larger stores which are usually located on the outskirts of big cities. This enables the business to be closer to its customers.

The store concept carriers a limited selection of Ikea’s furniture, home textiles, and homeware. The stores also enable shoppers to browse Ikea’s full product selection online from within the store and order in pieces for an omni-channel shopping experience.

“Ikea has a long-term view on Maharashtra and we will have an omni-channel approach in the market with small and big stores and online,” said an Ikea spokesperson, ET Bureau reported. “We opened the big Ikea Navi Mumbai store in 2020 and recently the first city store in Worli. Currently Ikea India is in talks with different entities in order to identify suitable locations for our future stores in Mumbai. We will be able to share more details at a later date when we have secured all processes.”

The new store in Ghatkopar is scheduled to open in mid-2022, a source told the Economic Times. Along with its Indian large-scale and small-scale stores, Ikea also runs a shopping app dedicated to the Indian market which operates in cities including Pune, Bengaluru, and Surat, among others.
