Swedish home furnishings retailer Ikea has strengthened its e-commerce operations in India with the launch of its online store in Pune.

Ikea launches its online store in Pune - Ikea

The online store is part of Ikea’s multi-channel approach in India. Pune is the second market in India after Mumbai to open online first without the presence of physical stores.

The online store will offer more than 7,500 products and cater to all locations across the city. Ikea aims to reach 100 million customers in three years with its multi-channel approach.

Commenting on the online store launch, Per Hornell, market expansion manager at Ikea India, in a statement said: “Maharashtra is a very important market for Ikea, and we see a lot of potential in Pune. Ikea’s priority is to meet consumer expectations by being affordable, accessible and sustainable. With our fulfilment center in Pune (Chakan) we are well prepared to serve our customers with a shorter delivery time.”

“Pune is home to Ikea’s first Distribution Centre (Fulfilment Centre) in India. Ikea plans to open two more such distribution centres in Delhi and Bengaluru in the next few years to ramp up its fulfilment capabilities across the country,” he added.

Ikea sees huge potential for growth in India and will be opening its next physical store in Mumbai later this year, followed by stores in Delhi and Bengaluru. It has earmarked an investment of around Rs 3,000 crore ($406.7 million) for its expansion in India.
