Swedish retailer Ikea is giving additional responsibilities to its country managers to meet its overall sustainability goals. The company has announced that Peter Betzel will handle the additional responsibility as chief sustainability officer for India.

Peter Betzel was appointed as the country head for the Indian market in 2018. Betzel has been with Ikea for more than two decades holding top positions in the company across all verticals.
Betzel will now be responsible to implement the Ikea sustainability strategy across the country.
“We want to grow the Ikea business in a sustainable way. By taking this step to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our retail operations, we can accelerate the transformation of the business to become even more affordable, convenient and sustainable for our customers,” said Tolga Öncü, retail operations manager, Ingka Group.
Peter Betzel added, “I am excited and inspired by formally taking on the role of chief sustainability officer. I have a greater responsibility to ensure that sustainability is integrated into everything we do as a business. It’s especially relevant for India and we have many ambitious plans.”
Ikea had entered the Indian market with the opening of its first store in Hyderabad last year. It has set a target of 25 stores by 2025 for the Indian market.
