The GJSCI brought together artisans from three states for a handicraft showcase at IIJS Signature which concluded over the weekend in Mumbai, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council announced on its website.

The pavilion highlighted handcrafted Temple Jewellery from Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu, the Art of Bidri, from Bidar in Karnataka, and Silver Filigree crafts from the Karimnagar district in Telangana.

“The artisans do not have much exposure, and some of them from more remote regions, are even hesitant to display their trade at such a public event,” the GJSCI’s chairman Sanjay Kothari said, about the Craft Pavilion participants, the GJEPC reported.

“We are trying to highlight their skills and link them up with jewellers who can further develop these art forms, which will be highly appreciated in many parts of the world.”

The GJSCI plans to revive the art forms, as well as modernise them to increase quality and output, and market them in the international market. The organisation will focus on ornaments and gift items made by craft skills passed down through generations.

The GJSCI has created certifications for craft products and has also worked with the government to set up a skills facility for artisans in Cuttack to produce and market jewellery for international buyers.
