The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a vocational fashion design certificate programme aiming to cover multiple aspects of the fashion industry.

IGNOU will now teach fashion design - IGNOU RC Shimla- Facebook

As part of IGNOU’s Vocational Education and Training section, students will now be able to study fashion. So far, teaching is only planned in English but other language options such as Hindi may be available at a later date. Courses ranging in duration from six months to two years will be available and students of all ages will be welcome.

The course will encompass pattern-cutting, designing, textiles, digital skills, and other aspects of the domestic and global fashion industry. The course aims to offer an entry into the fashion industry for a number of careers such as designer, pattern-cutter, assistant, and in the export sector.

This course is the IGNOU’s first foray into fashion education. As a government university that aims to provide education to all members of society, the launch of a fashion design course shows the Union Government’s commitment to the industry. As India’s fashion industry is growing swiftly, the government is focusing on the sector as a way to increase domestic production, namely in the textile sector.

The university was established by the government in 1985 and comprises 21 schools. The central university is located in Maidan Garhi in New Delhi.
