Hindustan Unilever Limited has announced that it will cover the costs of vaccinating three lakh people comprising its employees and extended community and said citizens’ health is the main focus of the nation.

“The entire focus of the country should be in taming the virus, protecting the health and well-being of the people,” said HUL’s chairman and managing director Sanjiv Mehta at a virtual quarterly earnings press conference on April 29, the Press Trust of India reported.

The fast-moving consumer goods business plans to vaccinate its employees, their families, and people in its extended community, it said. The business is currently in talks with various private hospitals to facilitate its vaccination plan.

Whether or not the business can maintain its growth targets for the year will depend on how swiftly the current outbreak can be contained, according to Mehta.

“Supply chains are running, even in places where there is localised lockdown, stores are opening,” said Mehta, remaining sanguine.

“The business, albeit impacted to some extent, it is still running… Let us wait and see how it pans out. At this stage, I firmly believe, looking at what has happened, it is not going to be as bad as what happened in the June quarter of last fiscal.”
