Hindustan Unilever has shifted its production and retailing to only goods deemed essential and has requested clarity on official logistics regulations on March 25. As India has been placed under strict lockdown due to the coronavirus, enforcement authorities across states need to be informed on how to facilitate the movement of goods across state lines to prevent holdups and potential shortages, the business said.

Over the past few days, the business has run into difficulties manufacturing and delivering essential goods, a company spokesperson said, ET Bureau reported. Other FMCG firms such as Grofers have also reported difficulties delivering goods and reported that some local authorities were booking delivery personnel who were not flouting any regulations.

“The government has rightly permitted food, vegetables, groceries and medicines to be excluded from the lockdown,” said a Hindustan Unilever spokesperson, ET Bureau reported.

“However, clear instructions need to be provided to the enforcement authorities across states so that these essential items and the supply chain around it, is allowed to function.”

Hindustan Unilever produces essential personal care products such as soap, hand sanitiser, and cleaning products. The business has temporarily halted production of its beauty products.
