Harvey Nichols and John Lewis are among the favourite stores for UK consumers but Topshop and Topman, Peacocks and JD Sports come much closer to the bottom of the list in a new poll from Which that looked at 100 key chains.

The consumer research group said that while audio-visual electronics specialist Richer Sounds and DIY store Toolstation came out at the very top in a poll of over 10,000 people, Harvey Nichols and John Lewis were close behind. They had a customer score of 79% based on a mix of satisfaction and likelihood of recommendation. It was a comedown for John Lewis as it had been joint top last year but it missed the top spot by only 1%. Meanwhile Harvey Nichols surged higher having been 21st a year ago.

The top 10 also included Apple and Bodycare, both on 78%, The Perfume Shop on 77%, and Cotswold Outdoors and Go Outdoors on 76%. Outside of the top 10, The Body Shop and Clarks scored 75%, Fenwick, Ikea and Lush scored 74% and Jojo Maman Bébé and Laura Ashley managed 73%.

Also scoring over 70% were Bonmarche, Selfridges, Burton, Debenhams, Fat Face, Gap, House of Fraser, Superdrug and M&S.

While the very lowest ranked of the 100 stores covered by Which (Morrisons) bagged a rating of only 55%, it was clear that a number of other stores left a lot to be desired. Pacocks was close to the bottom on 61% and Topshop/Topman scored only 1% more than that. Sports Direct and Miss Selfridge managed only 63%, while Shoe Zone, Primark and H&M managed 65%.
