The Goods and Services Tax Council will meet on June 21 and is expected to extend the authority of the National Anti-profiteering Authority until November 30, 2020 and consider several proposals.

The GST Council will host its 35th meeting on June 21

The NAA, which deals with consumer complaints pertaining to failing to receive GST cut benefits, is expected to be mandated to continue by the GST Council on Friday, an official source told the Press Trust of India.

Although the NAA was originally only intended to function for the first two years of the GST and would terminate in November this year, the authority continues to receive a large amount of consumer complaints.

While the Finance Ministry hopes to extend the NAA’s mandate by one year, the NAA itself hopes for a two year extension, the Press Trust of India reported. The GST was introduced in July 2017 and the NAA was set up the same November.

A number of proposals will also be discussed in the meeting including one to set up one appellate tribunal for all of the northeastern states and another for the six union territories. Other states are expected to set up their own appellate tribunals such as Delhi, Odisha, and Telangana.

The upcoming Friday meeting will be the council’s 35th meeting since the GST was brought in some two years ago. This will also be the first meeting held under the government’s new Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, following the recent general election.
