The Grasim Cellulosic Division of Grasim Industries, part of the Aditya Birla Group, has planned to expand its Vilayat plant. This mammoth project, which will require an investment of around 2,560 crore rupees, has now been given the go ahead by the Union Government’s Environment Ministry expressed in a letter to the business. However, the ministry has stated that Grasim Industries must comply with certain conditions for their proposal to go ahead.

Grasim Industries already has four Viscose Staple Fibre (VSF) plants in India and the business has predicted that the expansion of their Vilayat production unit in Gujarat will create 2,500 jobs in the region. The aim is also to increase VSF production from the current total of 127,750 tonnes per annum (TPA) to 255,500 TPA and set up a production unit for Solvent Spun Cellulosic Fibre with a capacity of 36,500 TPA. Grasim Industries also aims to increase their Sulphuric Acid production capacity from 102,300 TPA to 182,500 TPA, their Carbon Di-Sulphide production from 23,725 TPA to 34,675 TPA and their power plant capacity from 25 MW to 55 MW.

The business has stated that increased VSF production will fulfil the increased demand for manmade fibre textiles in India and that the textile will be popular with women’s and kids wear. As this huge project is getting off the ground, Grasim Industries have just been awarded the “Best in Culture Architecture” award at the Total Rewards League Awards by People Matters and the British Council.
