The institute is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ initiatives and will provide training to the youth in various aspects of hand-crafted jewellery making.

Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman is optimistic that institutes like these will boost the Indian jewellery sector and help compete with retail giants  like Cartier, Boucheron or Van Cliff across the globe.

Sitharaman emphasised the need to create such infrastructure to help Indian craftsman hone their skills in hand made jewellery which are in great demand in the international market.

Praveenshankar Pandya, Chairman, GJEPC said that IIGJ will focus on design & handmade jewellery and give a significant boost to Indian Gems & Jewellery sector.

The Institute plans to train and enhance hand crafted jewellery making skills of the youth to eventually fill the dearth of talent in the jewellery sector.

Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ) is being set up in association with National Institute of Design(NID), Ahmedabad.
