The country’s first ‘common facility centre’ (CFC) for gold jewellery was set up in the state of Tamil Nadu last year and many more are expected to come up in the coming months.

The government has already given its nod to set up CFC’s in important jewellery markets across India. During the fiscal year 2019-20 these centres will come up in the cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Hyderabad.

“The government is serious about the gems and jewellery industry and wants to promote the common facility centres for the growth of the sector. There are total 10,000 units across India with over 1.2 million skilled workforce, readily available for the MSME’s of the gems and service sector,” ministry of commerce and industry economic advisor Rupa Dutta was quoted as saying by PTI.

“Common facility centres are a tool for socio-economic transformation. Government has granted a few common facility centres in important jewellery hubs across India,” she added.

CFCs are also expected to boost the gem and jewellery exports from the country. The machinery at CFCs gives better quality and reduces production loss. Jewellers can utilise the CFC in their area for a fee.
