The recently government-approved National Technical Textiles Mission is intended to help India to become an international leader in technical textiles over the coming four years, it said in an official statement, the Press Trust of India reported. The mission will commence in the upcoming 2021 financial year and should be completed in the 2024 financial year, the government decided at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.

“We have mandated use of technical textiles in nine ministries and 92 products and our hope is that with convergence of efforts with the technology group we will see a new future for especially MSME and technologists in the field of technical textiles, thereby making India self sufficient specially in strategic fields like defence and aerospace,” said Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani at a press conference, the Press Trust of India reported.

As part of the programme, skill training in the technical textiles field will be carried out for around 50,000 people. The programme will encompass research, innovation and development, market development, export promotion education, training and skill development.

The initiative is part of the government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign which has worked to increase domestic production across a number of industries including textiles over the past few years. The campaign also aims to increase exports and lessen imports to reduce India’s trade deficit with a number of countries.
