Through a video message at a conclave jointly organised by the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), Ficci, and Khadi India, Minister Prabhu announced the government’s commitment to promoting the sustainable and traditional Khadi textile. In order to achieve this, the government will, according to Prabhu, encourage the production of new designs and styles featuring the textile.

Stating that district level development will be the key to the success of the initiative, Prabhu announced that the government will roll out Khadi pilot projects in six districts in five states. The Director General of Foreign Trade, Alok Vardhan Chaturvedi, who also took part in the conclave, stated that the Khadi sector employs over 80 lakh workers and that, whilst government sponsored promotions can give it a push, inherent demand is needed for long term success. Chaturvedi stated that securing demand is the most important step towards success.

The Chairman of the Indian Railway Board, Ashwani Lohani, opined that Khadi should be promoted as a symbol of national pride. Lohani also discussed the possibility of partnering with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) to develop a strategy to provide Khadi bedrolls on the railways as four lakh are needed per day.
