The government in Delhi plans to invest in Gandhi Nagar market over the next five years to create an apparel hub which will create 40,000 new employment opportunities and boost Delhi’s apparel industry.

The Gandhi Nagar textiles market is “Asia's largest readymade garment market,” said Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on March 26, the Press Trust of India reported. Stating that the market has the potential to greatly increase its business through a strategic investment of around Rs 20 crore, Sisodia said that bringing its vendors online will help them reach a wider audience and increase sales.

As part of the plan to upgrade the market, the local government plans to launch an online platform named ‘Delhi Bazaar’ to promote locally manufactured garments. The platform would be set up with zero-cost for traders and would also enable global shoppers to take a virtual tour of numerous Delhi markets.

“Delhi markets are not only the backbone of our economy, but also the reason for our respect,”said Sisodia. “One such market in Delhi is the readymade garment and textile market of Gandhi Nagar. The daily turnover of this market is more than Rs 100 crore and it generates one lakh direct and 2 to 3 lakh indirect employment opportunities.”

In order for the market amelioration to go ahead, Gandhi Nagar needs to be repositioned and rebranded in a more premium sector with strategic marketing, according to Sisodia.

The construction of new service centres and infrastructure redevelopment as well as legal recognition is also necessary for the plan to be successful, he said.
