Recently appointed Minister for textiles Piyush Goyal has announced plans to improve India’s textile industry by eliminating child labour, increasing wages, and increasing the quality of handloom products.
On July 15, Goyal led a review meeting with officials in the Ministry of Textiles to set out key focus areas for ameliorating the industry. Goyal said that he is confident that the industry will witness large-scale growth in the coming years, the Economic Times reported.
“He asked the concerned officials to think and undertake necessary measures for increasing income of people employed in textiles, put efforts to bring consistency in quality of handloom and eliminate child labour from the textiles sector,” said the Ministry of Textiles in a statement, ET Bureau reported.
Goyal also said that the ministry needs to work on increasing the productivity of local artisans as part of the Union Government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign to boost domestic industry. Praising artisans for their potential, Goyal said the ministry needs to help boost innovation and technology in the sector.
India is currently the sixth largest technical textile producing nation in the world and has a 6% share of the global market. India is the largest global producer of cotton and jute textile and 95% of the world’s handloom textiles come from India.
