The Union Government has ruled that businesses must join the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council in order to gain Kimberley Process certification for rough diamond imports and exports in India.

Diamond provenance is becoming increasingly important to the Indian consumer according to the GJEPC - Diamond Producers Association- Facebook

The government mandate gives the GJEPC the authority to regulate its members in terms of complying with the Kimberley Process certification norms, the GJEPC announced on its website. The move is mandate of the Union Government’s focus on “minimum government and maximum governance” and its aim of increasing ease of doing business in the country.

“As the largest manufacturing and exporting centre of cut and polished diamonds, India’s commitment against proliferation of conflict diamonds  is highlighted with this act of the government,” said GJEPC chairman Colin Shah, the GJEPC reported on its website.

“It gives GJEPC and its members power to self-regulate and continue with the impeccable standards that the Indian diamond industry as a brand put forth to the world.”

The GJEPC has therefore been named as the designated importing and exporting authority of India for the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) from November 22, 2021. The KPCS is designed to prevent the flow of conflict diamonds.

“In the recently concluded Plenary Meeting of the Kimberley Process the Indian diamond industry under the leadership of Indian Government has reiterated this stand by supporting the Frame 7 declaration of the KP in terms of promoting responsible diamonds to inculcate highest standards in terms of human rights, environment protection, labour rights, prevention of corruption, money laundering and terrorist funding in the Indian diamond industry,” said Shah.
