The central government is exploring the idea of introducing quality control orders for the Indian textile industry to cover around 100 technical textiles. The move is part of the Union Government’s wider plan to reduce the dependence of Indian industry on imports.

India currently imports large amounts of machinery and speciality fibres used in technical textiles production and aims to ameliorate the domestic industry to produce more goods in-country, the Economic Times reported. The government has thus far developed over 500 Bureau of Indian Standards regulations for the technical textiles industry and plans to add a further 40.

Of the new regulations, the government has introduced 19 standards for geo-tech, 12 for pro-tech, 22 for agro-tech, and six for medi-tech. The government is also planning to release grants to support startups in the coming month or so, mulling a grant of up to Rs 50 lakh for approved technical textile proposals.

“An evaluation committee would decide on approving a grant for that, so the grant would be up to Rs 50 lakh and that is what we are looking at,” said textile secretary Rachna Shah in a statement on January 5, ET Bureau reported.

Keen to ensure that technical textiles technology continues to advance in India, the government is also keen to enable new degree programmes in the sector. Businesses could also receive grants for taking on students as interns in the industry.
