The government aims to give women run-self help groups a platform from which to sell their products, often clothing, textiles, and jewellery, to a wider audience, TNN reported. By hosting the e-commerce platform on the government’s ONDC, it will be designed to be on a level playing field with other e-commerce platforms this should increase the ease with which shoppers can find its products. The government is currently developing the ONDC and recently invited public feedback for its grievance redressal process, according to its website.

India is home to a wide array of women-run self help groups which are designed to enable women of a similar socio-economic status to form a group and often work to manufacture a product. In a 2021 press release, the government counted around 70 lakh self-help groups based across the country with around 7.66 crore women members, Feminism in India reported.

The e-commerce platform will also support the central government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative which is designed to boost domestic production across numerous industries in order to reduce India’s trade deficit, create employment, and boost the economy. The initiative is also in line with the government’s plan to empower rural women to improve their living standards through gainful employment.
