Dholakia was awarded at a ceremonial function on Republic Day for his contributions to social work through his initiatives in Gujarat, Dholakia announced on Facebook. The diamantaire’s foundation runs numerous initiatives including supporting farmers and raising awareness about water pollution through a drive to clean up the river Ganges, among others.

“Being honoured with ‘The Padma Shri’ is not a fluke of fate, but my and my team's hard work paid off,” said Dholakia, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council reported on its website.
“I… choose the path of serving Mother Earth, regardless of whether or not anyone notices. I have never wished for appreciation and praise; all I wanted was to help the villages. I thank the villagers, government, families, and all those who supported and allowed me to serve and accomplish things I wanted to do for society.”

The Padma Shri award is one of the three Padma Awards and these are India’s highest official civilian awards. The Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri awards are announced each year on the occasion of Republic Day and conferred by the President of India at a ceremonial function.

“I’m grateful to all of you who’ve embarked on my journey,” said Dholakia.
