Government approves Rs 2,800 crore for khadi schemes till 2020

The Union Cabinet has given its nod for the continuation of Khadi Gramodyog Vikas Yojana until 2019-20 which is expected to benefit over 50 villages for the next fiscal year.

The total cost for all the various schemes under the Khadi and Gramodyog Vikas Yojana will be Rs 2,800 crore ($395 million) for the period 2019-20.
 
The government will introduce a new scheme ‘Rozciar Yukt Gaon’ with an aim to create entrepreneurs in the Khadi sector thereby generating employment opportunities for thousands of new artisans in the next financial year.

“Rozgar Yukta Gaon will be rolled out in 50 villages by providing 10,000 Charkhas, 2000 looms and 100 warping units to Khadi artisans, and would create direct employment for 250 artisans per village," an official government statement said.
 
“The total capital investment per village is estimated at Rs 72 lakh as the subsidy and Rs 1.64 crore in terms of working capital from the business partner. For this initiative, advanced skill development programmes shall be conducted through existing Centres of Excellence," the release added.
 
The government will also set up four design houses across the country with an investment of Rs 5 crore each to create modern designs and ethnic wear with regional variations.
