The gold purchased by the customers will be stored on behalf of the user, by MMTC-PAMP, in secure vaults which can be cashed in at any time as per the latest rates through the Google Pay app.

"Gold is core to Indian culture and tradition, making India the world's second largest consumer of gold. Indians buy gold to mark auspicious occasions each year be it Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras or Diwali," Google Pay India director product management Ambarish Kenghe said in a statement.

The latest gold offering by Google is expected to help the tech giant to make deeper inroads in the country’s booming digital market as India is the world’s largest consumer of gold.
