Google announced on Monday to mark International Women’s Day that it has committed to support one million rural women entrepreneurs across India for its ‘Women Will’ programme.

Google has committed to supporting women entrepreneurs in India

At a virtual event on March 8, Google shared that its Women Will platform will offer mentorship, community support, and accelerator programmes for rural women entrepreneurs in India, ET Tech reported.

“The success of the Internet Saathi program [which Google previously ran in India] has shown how digital access and digital literacy can help women to reach their full potential and improve their livelihoods,” said Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai, ET Tech reported.

“When women have equal access to opportunity, we all benefit from their perspectives, creativity and their expertise, and this is true all over the world.”

Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani also spoke at the event and voiced her support for initiatives to support women’s development.

Google also shared that its philanthropic arm Google.org will award a $500,000 grant to the Nasscom Foundation, which it will use to support 100,000 women working in agriculture by offering training on digital and financial literacy in six states: Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. The foundation will also offer counselling for the women on topics such as relationships.

“Women are almost twice as likely to lose their jobs during the pandemic and an estimated 20 million girls are at risk of not returning to school,” said Pichai.

“We have the opportunity to build a future that is more equal and more inclusive- and we must take it.”
