The Indian government is in the process of making hallmarking of gold jewellery sold in the country mandatory very soon in the interest of consumers.

The government will also scale up the hallmarking centres across the country to meet the hallmarking requirements from jewellers.

"BIS has set standards for hallmarking of gold jewellery in three grades of 14 carat, 18 carat, and 22 carat. We are going to make it mandatory soon," Food and Consumers Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said at a Bureau of Indian Standards event.

Paswan, however, did not specify the date of implementation of the mandatory gold hallmarking but stressed on the need to adopt the standards in the interest of consumers.

The Indian government last year had announced that, from January 2018, jewellers will have to get their gold jewellery hallmarked at 14, 18, and 22 carat before selling in India. However, after missing that deadline the Indian Government does not want to set a date and is currently working to strengthen infrastructures such as testing labs that will allow them to properly roll out compulsory gold hallmarking for both jewellery and gold bars.

Currently, India has over 220 BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centres with majority of them located in Tamil Nadu, followed by Kerala.

Greater regulation of the jewellery market through compulsory hallmarking is expected to  increase consumer trust and also make exports easier.
