8.1 million smartwatches were sold in Q4 of last year, which represented a growth of 316% from 1.9 million units sold in Q4 of 2014, found the research firm Strategy Analytics. The significant rise was attributed to Apple Watch, which captured an impressive 63% share of the global smartwatch market.

Meanwhile, global shipments of Swiss watches reached 7.9 million units in the period, down from 8.3 million in the prior year’s period.

Apple launched its smartwatch in April last year, while Samsung pioneered the field with its own model in autumn 2013. The South Korean company recorded a 16% share of the global market for smartwatches in the Q4 of 2015, leaving other brands such as Huawei, LG and Motorola with a combined 21% share of the market.
