The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council has reported that businesses retailing coloured gemstones are experiencing strong interest at its ongoing trade show IIJS Virtual.

India International Jewellery Show Virtual, which runs from October 12 to 16 online, marks the GJEPC’s first online trade show. With participating businesses spanning multiple sectors of the fine jewellery industry, it has thus far been coloured gemstones that have seen unexpected levels of interest, especially as many gemstone retailers were sceptical of online sales, the GJEPC reported on its website.

“Coloured gemstones can be sold digitally,” Ankit Khandelwal, from Shree Nath Gems, told the GJEPC, about his experience thus far at the trade show.

“I think this would be the new normal. We did not know people would actually buy coloured gemstones online. Because they need to be touched, but it is not like that anymore. This is one thing that GJPEC has taught us through IIJS Virtual.”

“It a new experience, so commenting on it would be immature,” said Vaibhav Jain from emerald retailer Gem Park.

“But given the conditions we are facing right now, this is the best GJEPC could do. I do not think there is any problem with the virtual shows. There is a huge scope to introduce innovative technology to showcase products ‘realistically’. This could be the future.”

“Developing the platform for IIJS Virtual and adding the required features to make it more realistic is wonderful,” continued Jain.

“GJEPC’s team has done an amazing job. The tutorials and videos provided by GJEPC were very helpful. And specially the onsite team guided us at every step. If there was any problem, the team was quick to address it.”

IIJS Virtual continues until Friday and features seminars, online meetings, and other digital features. The online trade show is taking place in lieu of IIJS Premiere, which was cancelled this season due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
