The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council held a seminar on the production of lab grown diamonds in Surat to address technical challenges and help to grow the industry in India.
On November 29, the GJEPC held an interactive information dissemination event in diamond hub Surat following feedback from the gems and jewellery industry, the organisation posted on its website. The GJEPC’s Regional Office Surat organised the event which was attended by 40 members.
A number of GJEPC members had voiced confusion over certain aspects of the production of lab grown diamonds which made them hesitant to enter the growing industry, the GJEPC reported. In order to address this, the RoS invited lab grown diamond expert Dr. Karnal Patel to speak at the event.
Patel spoke about Microwave Plasma Chemical Vapour Deposition technology, system evolution, Chemical Vapour Deposition, and lab equipment among other technological aspects as well as the business side of operations including supply chain, value generation, skills and productivity, and raw material requirements etc. A subsequent question and answer session allowed GJEPC members to dispel their doubts about the industry.
The rise of the lab grown diamond industry has not been taken well by a number of Surat’s diamond cutting businesses which are already struggling in the current slowdown. In September, the GJEPC reported that Indian synthetic diamond exports increased by 94.16% during the April to July period, 2019.
